Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has commended Governor Nasir El-Rufai for completing in two years the Zaria Regional Water project started by his administration in 2008. Speaking at the commissioning in Zaria, Sambo said five years after he left office as the governor, his successors did not make progress on the project, until El-Rufai made the project a reality within two years..
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, represented by the APC National Chairman John Odigie Oyegun, commissioned the project that will supply 150 million liters of water per day to Zaria town, Sabon-Gari and six other local governments areas.
Oyegun said by completing the project, the “major problem of the ancient emirate of Zaria has been resolved” by Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The APC chairman further stated that El-Rufai is showcasing what governance stands for and what the APC government stands for. “This is a broad impression of what governance is all about. This is a broad impression of what the APC is all about.”
He said despite the paucity of funds available to the federal, states and local governments as a result of the fall in oil revenue since the coming of this administration, ”El-Rufai is not only breaking new grounds in education, in health but also breaking new grounds in water supply,” Oyegun said.
Speaking at the event, Governor Nasir El-Rufai stated that the Kaduna state government funded the construction of the 150 million litres per day Zaria Water treatment plant. The project will bring to an end the decades-long water shortage suffered by Zaria and environs.
E-Rufai explained that the APC government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, prioritizes projects that benefit the people over politics, hence the decision by his administration to complete the project started by Namadi Sambo’s administration.
The Governor commended Sambo for initiating a project of such importance and also for securing international support from the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Banks who are providing credit facilities on concessionary terms for the remaining two phases of the project.
The governor said the Zaria Water Project will be a pilot for Kaduna State Water Supply scheme. He disclosed that the government is retrofitting and rehabilitating 12 water works across the state, in places like Kafanchan, Kagoro, Manchock, Kachia, Saminaka, Birnin-Gwari and Kaduna metropolis.
